Weather Update: We’re keeping a close eye on the nor’easter forecast and how it may affect our Sukkot celebrations. Because several of our gatherings are outdoors, dates, times, and/or locations may need to change. Please keep an eye on your email for the most up-to-date information before heading to an event. We’ll share any changes as soon as we can!
Malkhut has two sukkot (plural for sukkah, the booth we sit in during the holiday)!
One will be set up in the garden at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Jackson Heights, and the other will be at Culture Lab LIC. We have events throughout the holiday week, and we look forward to celebrating with you! Each event is listed below, registration links will come soon!

NEW EVENT Decorating and Snacking in the JH Sukkah!
Tuesday, September 29th from 4:30-6:00 PM
In Jackson Heights
Join us to decorate the Sukkah! We'll have lots of fun craft materials to let your creative juices flow. This event is for all ages. BYO snack, or a snack to share. We will also shake the lulav and etrog in the Sukkah!
Sukkah Decorating in LIC

Join us at the Culture Lab lot in Long Island City to help us decorate our Sukkah! Feel free to bring a snack to share. We will have plenty of art supplies for you to use, but if there is something additional you'd like to bring to create decorations, please do. We will learn about the holiday of Sukkot with Student Rabbi Emily Herzlin, and have a chance to shake the lulav and etrog.
Dinner and Song Share in the LIC Sukkah

Join us at the lot at Culture Lab in Long Island City for dinner and a song circle! This is a bring your own brown bag dinner event. A Malkhut song circle is a chance to share and enjoy music together. Bring a song to teach/sing/share with the community (we will get to as many as we can), or just come to listen and sing along!
Sukkot Partnership Event

We're excited to express our appreciation for the ongoing support and dedication of our Malkhut Partners! Join us in Malkhut's Jackson Height's sukkah in St Mark's beautiful garden over drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and nosh. It will be a relaxed and enjoyable evening where you can connect with other Malkhut Partners, our team, and shake the lulav and etrog. This gathering is our way of thanking you for your generosity and celebrating your Partnership. Children are welcome. Nature Walk and Discussion

In honor of Sukkot, join Malkhutnik Maya Falck as she leads a nature walk and near the LIC Sukkah. There will be an option to learn about foraging/harvesting local plants growing in Gantry Park. This program connects to both the harvest and nomadic themes that are central to the holiday of Sukkot. We will also learn about the emerging custom of sourcing the lulav and etrog components from local plants in our neighborhood. The event will end with snacking in the sukkah and discussion facilitated by Maya.

During Sukkot, it is customary to invite ushpizin (mystical/spiritual guests) to join us for meals in the sukkah. Please join members of Malkhut's LGBTQIA affinity group for BYO dinner and a discussion about Jewish queer and trans ancestors who we can call into the sukkah this year. Open to all Malkhutniks interested in LGBTQIA history.
Simchat Torah

Join us for an extra sweet culmination of our fall holidays. This year Simchat Torah begins on Shabbat, so we’re going to celebrate both! We’ll begin with a festive meal with lots of blessings, and then our clergy and Music Director Kris Wettstein will lead us in celebrating the renewal of the cycle of Torah for the year. We'll dance and sing with our Torah scrolls to some raucous music. Then we'll unroll one of our scrolls all of the way, take a tour of some highlights with Cantor Miriam, and hear the very end and very beginning of the Torah.
Sukkot learning resources:
Student Rabbi Emily Herzlin wrote this teshuva (a genre of rabbinic responsa literature) to explore the halakhic validity of the growing practice of sourcing from plants from one’s local environment to use in place of the traditional arba minim (four species) of the lulav and etrog. Student Rabbi Emily is delighted to offer this project as a resource to the Malkhut community to enrich our Sukkot practice this year!
